Installing speedyPDM

Speedy is a network application installed in two steps. The first step involves installing the server components followed by configuration. The second step involves installing the client workstations. For client workstations, you can install either a link to the server or the complete program. The difference is that with a full client installation, data resides on the local PC, whereas otherwise, it resides on the server.
The installation language is selected based on the operating system's language.

Network Installation

The Speedy program files are installed on the server, while either a full program installation or just a shortcut is set up on the individual workstation. A hardware key and the installation of a license manager are required for the server. No hardware key is required on the workstations.

Server Installation

During server installation, all programs and files are installed on the network computer. MySQL is used as the default database system. The installation consists of two steps:
- The basic server components and the database system are installed. To do this, launch the installation program [speedy-server_8.x.x.x.exe]. - The program and support files are installed. To do this, launch the installation program [speedy-prog_8.x.x.x.exe].

The installation programs guide you through the installation process step-by-step: * A directory containing all Speedy program components is created on the server (e.g., C:\speedy). * A new instance of a MySQL database is installed and configured. The Windows service for the MySQL database is named “SpeedyDB”. The MySQL server listens on port 3313 (instead of the standard 3306).

If the server is protected by a local firewall, port 3313 must be opened.

* The installation directory (e.g., C:\speedy) is shared under the share name “speedy_bin$” (hidden share). * The data directory (e.g., C:\speedy\vault) is shared under the share name “speedy_data$” (hidden share).

Once the installation is complete, the base directory of the Speedy Vault must be adjusted using Speedy-Admin. To do this, launch the Speedy-Admin program (dwAdmin.exe) and edit the properties of the vault named “$”. Specify a network share accessible from other computers on the network as the base directory (e.g., \\SERVERNAME\speedy_data$\vault).

Once installation is complete, the base directory of the Speedy Vault must be adjusted using Speedy-Admin. To do this, launch the Speedy-Admin program (dwAdmin.exe) and edit the properties of the vault named “$”. Specify a network share accessible from other computers on the network as the base directory (e.g., \\SERVERNAME\speedy_data$\vault).

The setup installs add-ins for the current and previous versions of AutoCAD, SolidWorks, and Inventor. If you wish to use an older version of SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or Inventor, you can install the corresponding files using a command-line parameter. To do this, include the parameter /Old = 1 when launching [speedy-prog_8.x.x.x.exe].

When running the server installation [speedy-server_8.x.x.x.exe] on a client operating system (e.g., Windows 10/11), you must choose between a Client-Server installation and a Server installation during the setup process.
A Client-Server installation should be selected if the server is not intended to be accessible over the network (e.g., a “2Go” workstation or a test installation). In this case, no “$” shares are created, and dwKernel.ini is mapped to the local path.
A Server installation performs a standard server installation that includes the creation of shares.

Depending on the Vault configuration and how Inventor is used, the project file in the Vault directory may need to be adjusted.

Client Installation

You must now decide whether you want a full installation or an installation linked to your database.

Full Installation

With a full installation, all program files are copied to the local workstation. To do this, open the installer [speedy-standalone.exe] from the Speedy installation directory “..\speedy\inst” and follow the instructions in the installation wizard.

Advantages of a full installation: * Faster program startup times * Administrator can initiate an update at any time Disadvantages of a full installation: * Different versions of the Speedy program may be in use across the network The installer: * Installs the required database drivers. * Installs all program data. * Creates program shortcuts on the desktop. * Registers existing CAD interfaces. * Installs virtual PDF and TIFF printers. * Creates a local inbox directory at c:\speedy

Local administrator rights are required for the installation.

Administrator rights are not required when updating a full installation. The update can be performed by an individual user or an administrator.

To perform an automatic installation or update, the batch file speedy-standalone_inst.cmd can be used. This file must be configured once for the Speedy environment. Afterward, run this file as an administrator on the client machine, and the installation or update will proceed in the background.

Partial Installation

To avoid installing all program files, a client-server installation can be used. On each client workstation, launch the installer [speedy-client.exe] from the Speedy installation directory “…\speedy_bin$\inst” to set up an installation linked to the server, and follow the instructions in the installation wizard. Advantages of the partial installation: * There is only one program version, as all program files are located on the server. Disadvantages of the partial installation: * Program startup may take longer. * No users may be logged in during an update process. The installation program: * Installs the required database drivers. * Creates program shortcuts on the desktop. * Registers existing CAD interfaces. * Installs virtual PDF and TIFF printers. * Creates a local inbox directory: c:\speedy

Local administrator rights are required for installation.

Standalone installation

Install speedy in the following order: * [speedy-server_8.x.x.x.exe] * [speedy-prog_8.x.x.x.exe] * [speedy-client.exe]

No administrator rights are required for an update.

Running the session as a service on a Terminal Server / Remote Desktop

The dwSessionSvc allows the speedyPDM session to run as a Windows service. This is particularly recommended for terminal servers or remote desktop environments (such as the job server), as it significantly reduces login times in speedy modules. The file dwSessionSvc.exe must be located in the directory \\SERVER\speedy_bin$\bin64. Installation is performed via the command prompt (cmd), which must be opened with administrator privileges.

There are three available parameters:

ParameterDescription
-Service Registers the service in Windows. The service will then be visible and configurable in the Services management console. (Recommended)
-RegServer Registers the service with the COM module.
-UnregServer Unregisters both the local server and the service.

Example command:

\\SERVER\speedy_bin$\bin64\dwSessionSvc.exe -Service

Once successfully registered, the service appears in the Windows Services management console. Ideally, set the startup type to “Automatic (Delayed Start)“; this ensures stable initialization after the system boots up.
